The Barden Corporation (UK) Limited at the 2010 Farnborough Airshow (Hall 1, Stand B21)

Barden UK to present Bearing Diagnosis and Repair (D&R) facility at Farnborough Airshow

The Barden Corporation (UK) Limited will be among the exhibitors at this years prestigious Farnborough Airshow which takes place from July 19th to 25th. Barden UK will be showcasing a range of super precision ball bearing solutions for aerospace applications from stand B21 in Hall 1.

In addition to the products on show, Barden UK will also be promoting their Diagnosis and Repair (D&R) facility for aerospace-approved and industrial bearings. Having received EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) Part-145 approval for the facility in 2009, Barden UK is able to offer a rapid turn around time (normally 7 days) for level 1 inspection and level 2 refurbishment of bearings used in any industry where regulatory approvals are high or where traceability of the bearings is required. Primarily covering the aerospace sector, this also includes bearings for rail applications and nuclear installations.

Brian Williams, Director of Quality at Barden UK explains the service: “Initially, we would strip down the bearing and examine it for signs of wear. If the bearing is within acceptable limits it is then cleaned and reassembled prior to being packed and returned to the customer as a ‘serviceable’ item. This is Level 1 - Diagnosis. Bearings that fall outside acceptable limits may, in some cases, be refurbished in accordance with defined repair schemes. These are Level 2 - Repair activities and may again result in ‘serviceable’ product. Bearings that are beyond economic recovery are tagged as ‘unserviceable’ and returned to the customer.”

The Plymouth plant has a self-contained, access-controlled, 1,800 square feet D&R station, with storage racks, working surfaces and inspection equipment. At present, the station can handle bearings up to 300mm outside diameter and the second phase of the project has seen the D&R station expanded to include dedicated receiving, cleaning and measuring equipment.

The EASA Part-145 approval enables Barden UK to service the commercial aerospace markets in Europe, where there is a demand for fast turnaround times on key aircraft components. This includes bearings for small engines, gearboxes and auxiliary power units.

With almost 1,400 exhibitors from 40 different countries and 132,000 trade visitors expected to visit over the week, the Farnborough Airshow is one of the most important events in the European Aerospace calendar. The show includes numerous events, including a static aircraft display, dedicated Space and UAV areas and a daily aircraft flying display.
